Having a cat at home is an adorable stress reliever. But this can also come with a challenge—a pungent smell from your pet’s pee and poop! Cats produce lots of body waste, thus cat litter matters. Choosing the right choice of cat litter can make a significant difference to your cat, your entire household and the earth.
What Is a Plant-Based Cat Litter?
Anyone with a cat knows that scooping daily is part of a cat owner’s life. This does not only include scooping poop but also getting rid of it afterward. This involves using bags, liners, and other storage until the wastes are picked up and dropped into your designated landfill.
Plant-based cat litter is the answer if you want to achieve the closest possible solution to minimal waste. This is one of the latest types of cat litter made of earth-friendly materials that still promise a high absorbency rate and quick clumping. Unlike the usual cat litter, certain plant-based litter eliminates odor better and is deemed safer for your pet.
The Best Plant-Based Cat Litter
Tofu-based litter
An eco-friendly superstar and 100% cat-safe litter option is tofu-based litter. Food-grade soy pulp makes this litter that has impressive absorption capabilities. Such litter can efficiently absorb liquid such that it is four times greater than itself in a matter of seconds! It lasts a long time and is easy to clean. Given that it is 100% biodegradable, you can flush it down your toilet and you’re done with the cleaning process.
Pottycats have been picked as Malaysia's favourite natural cat litter. Cats adore us as well! Yes, we outperform other tofu litter on the market because we place a high value on the quality of our ingredients without the nasties. Our magical formula extends the life of your litter while using less!

Wood-based litter
Pine wood makes the secondary favourite next to tofu litter. Mostly made from pine, wood-based cat litter has an advantage for its capillary formation on the litter, unsurprisingly soaking up more moisture. However, pine wood does not dry as quickly as tofu and can leave your litter box soggy and smelly if not scooped on time. Also, be wary of pine wood litter brands that do not use a kiln drying process to remove phenol, a natural oil found in pine that is extremely toxic to cats!
Recycled paper-based litter
Made from 100% recycled and biodegradable paper, you can count on this absorbent litter to soak up your cat’s wastes as a more affordable alternative. You can also add it to your compost for the benefit of your soil and plants. Lower your expectations for this litter because absorption is poor when compared to tofu and pine litter, and there is no clumping effect to help with scooping. To be honest, it can get a little icky and may not be the most comfortable environment for the cats!
How We Can Help The Earth?
Biological wastes, such as pee and poop, may contribute to biohazards or pollution on earth. And plant-based litter can be the solution to help save the planet.
Here are a few cat litter facts that might surprise you:
- Did you know that a single cat can contribute more than 60KG of litter to landfills each year? Malaysia has approximately 11.2 million cat owners, with majority still using non-plant based cat litter.
- A large portion of that litter comes from conventional bentonite clay and crystal litters, which are not only mined from the earth but also do not degrade or biodegrade in landfill, meaning they remain on the planet indefinitely. Psst, and unsafe for the cats!
- Crystal litter produces 39% more carbon dioxide than plant-based litter and natural clay litter is strip-mined from the earth, destroying natural habitats.
With the continuous development of cat litter, here are the reasons why plant-based litter leads to the correct direction:
- 100% compostable and biodegradable
- Safe, natural and chemical-free
- Non-toxic and completely sanitary
- More options on disposal: flush down or add to a compost
- Less contribution to waste piling in landfills
- Eco-friendly for a smaller carbon footprint
